The transition from boy into man is a hugely profound and unique
experience that, ideally, a father should guide his son through. I've figured
out much on my own, and it all seems to center on these laws/themes on what a
Man should be.
In random order then, a Man:
Protects his family. Anyone or anything that aims to do his
family harm will have to go through him first.
A man defends himself, especially to protect his reputation.
Knows and admits when he's wrong.
Knows how -- and when -- to laugh.
Knows that there is no shame in asking for help, but that he must also
possess his own skill.
Is loyal, dependable, and reliable. People count on him
instead of worrying about him.
Knows that being a leader breaks down into three simple things:
When a leader is put in command, he takes charge
A leader does the right thing -- not the cheapest, easiest,
simplest, or fastest thing.
A leader knows that in order to be successful, those underneath him
must be successful first.
Helps people without expecting anything in return.
Doesn't complain. Instead, he sits down, shuts up, and
solves the damn problem.
Is involved in the world around him.
Treats others with respect, regardless of age, education, or ability,
but also knows that respect itself must still be earned and can very easily
be taken away.
Knows how to be a gentleman to a Lady.
Offers his arm.
Knows that "just because" is sometimes all the reason you need.
Holds the umbrella
Offers his coat when it’s cold or rainy
Buys flowers when she expects them... and when she doesn't.
Knows that marriage and fatherhood is not to be entered into lightly.
Teaches what he knows to the next generation
More as they come to mind...
