Andy fixes his sunroof

This morning (December 19, 2008), President Bush approved a bailout for General Motors and Chrysler and, to a lesser degree, Ford. The bailout has many conditions, which is why I'm mixed on it. On the one hand, I recognize that the Detroit automakers employ a hell of a lot of people. On the other hand, there is the question of quality products, as my experience below demonstrates.

General Motors -- or more accurately, Saturn -- decided in its infinite wisdom to build a particular load-bearing bracket out of plastic instead of metal. Result? A few pennies saved in manufacturing costs, but the sunroof breaks after just a year or so of use. This is how I went about replacing the plastic brackets with the metal ones that should have been in there all along.

Penny-wise and pound foolish, thy name is General Motors.
