The Recession of 2007-2009
As I write this, the general sentiment in the news is that the recession that began in December 2007 is over. As I have always maintained, a recession truly ends when it feels that way when you see it in your paycheck, and not when some economist or government bureaucrat says so.
If it has indeed ended, this recession has been one hell of a ride, and marked the end of many storied companies -- Lehman Brothers, Merrily Lynch, and Mervyns to name a few. It was also during this recession that I worked at the US Bankruptcy Court in San Jose. We were busy, but not to the degree of the Bankruptcy Court in New York or Delaware. Why did a law student with an intellectual property background go work in bankruptcy? Because, as the links below illustrate, bankruptcies were all the rage for a while and the opportunity to learn about them was too good to pass up.
So here we go then, an incomplete list of major companies that went bankrupt from December 2007 to the present. Some of the names will be familiar. If they aren't, click on the link and I'm sure you'll recognize what product or service the company provided.
